Description
This distinctive table is made to adorn an entryway or grace any room in the house or office with a little bit of wall space. The Madrone and Black Walnut Side Table is about 38″ long x 12″ wide x 28″ tall with a hand-shaped, walnut-framed madrone lower trestle which is secured to its end stretchers with decorative (yet strong) wedged thru-tenons. The madrone tabletop has a natual streak of blush and is framed in with walnut that has hints of claro (lighter colored streaks) as an accent.
Aprons and stretchers are secured to the walnut legs with double 3/8″ x 5/8″ tenons epoxied into their respective mortises for strength and longevity. I hand shape each leg using a very fine finish spokeshave after roughing out on my bandsaw; the general shape was taught to me in a fine furniture school co-sponsored by the late Jim Krenov, a famous furniture maker and author. The tabletop is secured to the aprons using slotted steel clips which allow for the natural seasonal movement of the solid wood piece. To allow for that same seasonal wood movement, I designed and built the walnut framing for the tabletop so that all of the grain orientation is parallel, or in line…you will know what I mean when you look at the tabletop. If this design allowance was not made, the framing could split away from the endgrain of the maple panel, so this is a very important consideratiton that must never be overlooked.
All component parts are finished with multiple coats of “Maloof” oil/polyurethane finish, a mixture that penetrates into the wood aiding in its preservation and enhancing the grain appearance as well as the streak of “blush” found in the tabletop. After the handrubbed oil/poly coats have properly cured, I topcoat the entire piece with several coats of “Minwax” quick dry polyurethane for protection and ease of care. Though the surfaces are protected from everyday spills (which can just be sponged off), any hot object placed directly on the surface could result in a “ring” or mark that can only be corrected by refinishing the piece. This is a hazard for any piece of fine furniture which has an oil based finish, so coasters or placemats are a must under hot objects placed on this table surface. The shine of the piece can be maintained by just about any commonly available furniture polish.
